INCE this day is the feast of a Virgin, the love of chastity bids us say something of virginity; lest, in passing it over, we should seem to obscure that which was her chief strength. Virginity is to be praised, not merely because it is found in Martyrs, but because it makes Martyrs. For who can include this virtue in the human character, when not even nature includes it among her laws? Or who can express in natural speech what is beyond the experience of nature? It has summoned from heaven what it will imitate upon earth. Nor does it unworthily seek a rule of life from heaven, when it has found its Spouse in heaven.V.
